Custom made jewelry vs. personalized jewelry comes down to one question. Who drew the design? With personalized jewelry, someone else has already designed the piece and you add the details such as a name, a date, initials, a birthstone. With custom made jewelry, the design starts with your idea and gets built for you, and nobody else ends up wearing or creating the same thing.

These two terms get confused constantly. That matters, because the possbilities are very different, particularly price, timing, and what you're allowed to change. We make custom pieces at our studio on West 45th Street in Midtown Manhattan, and plenty of the inquiries we get are really personalization requests.

What Is Personalized Jewelry?

Personalized jewelry is a finished design with blanks you fill in, some examples are name necklaces, initial pendants or  a band with a date engraved inside. The seller already has the model and the production file, and your input goes into fields they built to be changed.

It's quick, usually affordable, and you know the price at checkout. For a gift on a deadline, it's often a choice that works well.

The limit is the template or the design thats already been made. You can pick the font, maybe the metal color. You can't move the stone or change the profile of the band. And plenty of sites selling "custom name necklaces" are selling personalization under another label.

What Is Custom Made Jewelry?

Custom made jewelry is designed for one person from the start. Here's roughly how a piece moves through our studio:

1. Consultation. A call or studio visit covering budget, natural vs. lab-grown stones, and metal. We don't quote before this. Those answers move the number more than anything.
2. Design direction. Sketches, reference photos, or a concept you rough out in our AI jewelry design tool.
3. CAD model. CAD stands for computer-aided design: a 3D model you review from every angle before any metal is cast.
4. Revisions. We let you review the renders and then make design changes before we make anything. 
5. Production. Casting, setting, and polishing, all done in the USA.
6. Delivery. Free and insured, signature-required shipping or studio pickup.

After design approval, we typically finish in two to three weeks. The big online builders often quote six to eight. Most of that gap comes from keeping design and production close together.

The Middle Ground: Modified Designs and Remounts

Most people don't start from a blank page. They've found a ring they like and want the band thinner, or the halo gone. That's still custom work. The piece gets its own CAD, and nobody else's version matches it.

Remounting is the other big one: taking a stone or stones you already own, and setting it into a new piece often a different type of piece. Before we touch it, the stone is documented on an intake agreement. The full process is on our remounting diamonds and gemstones page.

Custom vs. Personalized Jewelry: Price, Timing, and Changes

• Price. Personalized is the base price plus an engraving or stone add-on, shown at checkout. Custom pricing depends on the stone, the metal weight, and the labor, so we set it after the consultation. Custom often lands closer to a branded store ring with the same stone than people expect.
• Timing. Personalized pieces usually ship within days to a couple of weeks. Custom runs two to three weeks here after CAD approval.
• What you can change. Personalized: whatever the template allows. Custom: almost anything, right up until the metal is cast.
• Returns. Both are usually final sale once engraved or produced.

Which One Do You Need?

• A gift with a name or a date, needed soon: personalized.
• You want to use a stone you already own: custom, as a remount.

Is custom jewelry more expensive than personalized jewelry?

How long does custom made jewelry take?

At The Custom Jeweler, most pieces are finished in four weeks after the CAD design is approved. Large national builders often quote eight weeks. Personalized catalog pieces tend to ship faster, often within days to two weeks, because the design and production files already exist.

Can I bring my own diamond to a custom jeweler?

Yes, and it's one of the most common requests we get. It's called remounting. At The Custom Jeweler, your stone is documented on an intake agreement, checked for condition, and set into a new design built around it. Older cuts and visible inclusions can limit which settings are safe.
